2009 Vaquero Fiesta
The 2009 Grand Fiesta, sponsored by Richard and Nancy Caldwell and the California Ranch Horse Association, was held the weekend of August 8 - 9. It was a huge success and everyone attending had a great time. All contestants said that they would be back next year and would be bringing their friends. Richard and Nancy have been warned by competitors to expect an onslaught of entries for the 2010 Grand Fiesta. There was a great turnout of vendors reading like a whos-who such as Todd Hansen (just announced as Bit and Spur Maker of 2009), Bill Black, Yamsi Silver, Lynda Doyle, Bruce Haener and the list goes on and on. There were well over a dozen top notch vendors attending and everyone of them donated a quality item to be given as various awards to the contestants. There were local sponsors as well as sponsors from as far away as Canada. Bill Wilson, supplier of the cattle, attended the event both days as an observer and was so impressed that he generously donated the cattle for the event. The event sponsors were also very grateful to Steve Munson at the RO Ranch in Nevada. He came to watch the event and was so impressed that he also came forward with a very generous donation. Pete and Marilyn Bowling of the Oasis Ranch were the judges for the event and offered to return again next year. They so much enjoyed the event that they generously donated a breeding to Cowboy at Heart to be auctioned off next year and all proceeds to go to next year's event. The food was plentiful, and we all enjoyed a catered Tri-tip meal sponsored by the Elks Club on Saturday night. Everyday the event broke for a 2 hour lunch, at which time all contestants had a good time to visit the vendors and visit with friends. During that same break, there was dummy roping for the kids and break away roping in the main arena. This event is different from other venues in that the emphasis is placed on family entertainment at an affordable price. Food, competition, vendors, and camping were all held at the central location. This competition and the overall atmosphere is based on a Fiesta weekend that is held to show one's roping abilities, stockmanship, horsemanship, and yet also be able to enjoy time with friends. Saturday's main events consisted of Riata Roping only, and Sunday's main events consisted of the stockhorse classes. According to all attendees, including vendors, competitors, and observers, the event was entirely entertaining and informative.
